Memorial Day Weekend: Kicking Off BBQ Season the Healthy Way

Memorial Day weekend is right around the corner, and for many of us, that means two things: a time to honor and remember those who served our country, and the unofficial start of barbecue season.

Whether you’re firing up the grill for a small family get-together or hosting a backyard bash with friends and neighbors, Memorial Day weekend feels like the green light for summer fun. But let’s be honest -between the burgers, chips, and sugary drinks, it can be easy to go overboard and forget about the healthy habits we’ve worked hard to build.

The good news? You don’t have to give up flavor or fun to keep your BBQ a little lighter and better for you. Here are a few simple tips to kick off the season feeling great, not sluggish.

  1. Lighten Up Your Grill Choices

Burgers and hot dogs might be BBQ staples, but they aren’t the only option. Try mixing things up with:

Chicken or turkey burgers – leaner and just as satisfying.

Grilled fish like salmon, shrimp, or tilapia – quick to cook and full of healthy fats.

Veggie options – portobello mushrooms, black bean burgers, or even grilled tofu can surprise you with how good they taste.

  1. Make Veggies the Star of the Show

Grilled vegetables are colorful, flavorful, and super easy to prepare. Try:

Veggie kabobs with bell peppers, zucchini, onions, and mushrooms.

Grilled corn on the cob brushed with olive oil and sprinkled with chili powder or garlic.

Fresh side salads with light vinaigrettes instead of heavy dressings.

  1. Swap Out Heavy Sides for Fresh Favorites

Instead of loading up on potato salad or chips, try adding:

Fruit platters with watermelon, berries, and pineapple.

Cucumber or tomato salads with fresh herbs and a splash of lemon.

Whole grain sides like quinoa or couscous salads with veggies.

  1. Sip Smarter

Stay refreshed without the sugar crash by serving:

Infused water with lemon, mint, or cucumber.

Sparkling water with fresh fruit.

Light mocktails with iced tea, coconut water, or fresh citrus juice.

  1. Get Moving and Enjoy the Outdoors

Barbecue season isn’t just about the food; it’s also a great chance to enjoy the outdoors and get moving. Set up lawn games like cornhole or frisbee, or take a group walk around the block after eating.

A Weekend to Remember

While we celebrate the unofficial start of summer, it’s important to remember the true meaning of Memorial Day—honoring those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom.

So, this weekend, gather with loved ones, enjoy the sunshine, and kick off barbecue season in a way that’s both healthy and meaningful.
